Jasper is an opaque variety of quartz and is usually red, yellow or brown in colour. It contains up to 20% foreign material which can give the stone a multicoloured, striped, or spotted appearance. It has a smooth surface, can be highly polished and owes its red colour to iron inclusions.
Jasper is known to have been a favourite gem in the ancient world and its name can be traced back in Hebrew, Assyrian, Persian, Greek and Latin. It was highly valued in ancient times, not only for its beauty, but also for the reputed magical and medicinal properties. Jasper is known as the "Patron stone of counsellors and healers" and was used for many different medications Ancient people used jasper to relieve pain, especially childbirth and is reported to sooth the nerves and to treat the kidneys, spleen, bladder, liver and stomach. Red jasper is said to be an intensely protective stone, stabilising the aura and bringing contentment.
